“When we have new tyres, we have this problem” – Joan Mir

Joan Mir has a tough MotoGP Catalunya GP in prospect. Despite great confidence with his race pace, problems with the new tires to be fast have relegated him to 17th place on the starting grid in Barcelona, which will make his task very difficult.

The Team Suzuki Ecstar rider explained to the press that progress had been made in race pace during the day on Saturday, but problems with the new tires complicated his task:

– Everything is a consequence, it’s not that we have problems with the whole bike. We have problems in the corners, then everything becomes a little more difficult. Honestly, it wasn’t such a bad day. Yes, we have come a long way, but we have made progress, especially with used tyres. I’m happy with the work with the used tyres, I’m able to be consistent and fast. The problems we had with used tires are a little better. But when you have new tyres, regardless of the compound, you have this problem again and it becomes more difficult.

So Mir said: “That’s the situation, that’s why I find it so difficult to set the lap time, I often go wide and we don’t solve the problems with worn tyres. That’s the next thing we need to do to improve.”

The 2020 champion assured that in terms of race pace he has reason to be optimistic, but there is still a lot to improve with the new tyres: “Honestly, here I am more optimistic because in the race rhythm, in FP4 with worn tires, I feel very good. – I think we are the strongest in pace with used tyres. But it’s hard to accept that when you put new tires on, you’re not competitive, you can’t make them work. This is the next step; we’re a long way off, but we’re taking good steps and it wasn’t so bad today”.
