Motorcycle safety is meant to be a two-way street and drivers and drivers in Livingston County are reminded to do their part.
May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, but throughout Michigan, the Secretary of State’s “Look Twice – Save a Life” program aims to promote motorcycle awareness, safety and education to the car drivers. A press release says just taking a second glance before turning around or checking blind spots can prevent accidents and save lives.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said that while it is generally believed that motorcycle crashes occur most often on highways, 84% of motorcycle crashes actually occur on city streets. She urges motorists to remain aware of motorcyclists at all times, but especially in high-risk situations, such as when changing lanes or turning left.
The National Safety Council reported that in 2017, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all road fatalities and that 28% of drivers who died in motorcycle crashes in 2017 were drunk.
